Grandma Prisbrey's Bottle Village

Bottle Village was built by a badass lady, Grandma Prisbrey, between 1956 and 1981. She used tens of thousands of bottles to make house,walkways, sculptures and mosaics all over her property.

Usually getting to see it is pretty hard (there is only one tour a month and anything other than that needs to be specifically requested) but this weekend they are having an open house. You can go explore the property and see Bottle Village between 10am and 3pm this Saturday, April 6th.

Help Make Art: Urs Fischer

MOCA is looking for participants to help create a large scale, collective clay sculpture. It’s a pretty cool opportunity to create something that will be part of the MOCA exhibition “Urs Fischer” opening on April 21, 2013. David Lynch: Meditation, Creativity, Peace

David Lynch has made a documentary about his 16 country tour of the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America to promote the benefits of mediation. It’s premiering in Los Angeles tomorrow, April 2nd at 7:30pm at the Hammer Museum. Most of the movies Lynch makes are pretty ridiculously weird, so I’m really interested to see his take on documentary film-making.

But that’s not the best part. The best part is David Lynch (and for some reason Russel Brand) will be there in person for a Q&A afterward. So weird!!

Who cares if you are apathetic about mediation, it’s free so go get yourself cultured. Entrance is first-come first-served, so definitely be sure to get there early.

El Clasico Beer Pong Tournament

If you’re feeling nostalgic for your college years come check out a giant beer pong tournament “El Clasico” this Saturday, March 30th at Busby’s East (on the Miracle Mile). Forty co-ed teams of two will be competing for glory. If you want to play, tickets are $30.

If you’d rather not, you can still go and watch the competition (plus they will be broadcasting College Basketball on a ton of TVs). Spectator tickets with a one hour open bar sell for $20. Or you can click this link here and get a 20% off discount.

Besides the beer that is included in the ticket, there will also be free food, music, photo-booth, and prizes.

KCRW Pop-Up Party and Gallery

KCRW is hosting a party downtown this Saturday, March 30th. It’s happening at Greenbar Distillery, which is Los Angeles’ first distillery since Prohibition. It’s usually closed to the public, so this is a great opportunity to check it out. There will also be a gallery of photographs of musical artists who have visited the KCRW studios.

Greenbar will be providing the cocktails and music will be by KCRW DJs Dan Wilcox & Aaron Bryd. There will be a bunch of food trucks to grab a snack and coffee by Caffe Luxxe

LA Live College Basketball Fan Fest

This weekend LA Live has a free downtown event in honor of March Madness. The LA Live College Basketball Fan Fest will be outdoors on Thursday March 28- Saturday March 30th. There are skill challenges on a giant basketball court, music, burger bars, contests, etc.

Also, on Friday, March 29th there will be a free Capital Cities and Gold Fields concert. Capital Cities has that catchy song “Safe and Sound” and I’ve seen them perform before. They are awesome (and more awesome to see for free).

Electric Dusk Drive-In

There are some pretty cool experiences unique to Los Angeles and one of them is a rooftop drive-in movie. Tonight Electric Dusk Drive-In will be screening A Clockwork Orange. It’s $10 per person and that’s either if you watch in your car or sit on the outdoor astroturf area.

If you can’t make it tonight they will be showing films on random Saturdays from now through August 31st. Consider it your first taste of summer

Tallis Scholars Performance

If you have a little extra cash in your pocket and are looking to do something classy, then start your weekend off with classical music played in one of the most iconic buildings in all of Los Angeles

This Friday, March 22nd The Tallis Scholars will be playing music from the 16th and 21st centuries in the atrium of the Bradbury Building downtown. The 7:30pm show is sold out but the 9pm show still has tickets. Prices range from $44-$53

Before and after the concert you can walk through a photo exhibit at the Bradbury. There will also be a complementary wine & cheese pairing after the show at Les Noces du Figaro

LA Beer Fest

LA Beef Fest is happening Saturday, April 6th. Over 50 craft brewers take over the Paramount Studio Lot to provide you with unlimited beer. The tickets are $40 and include unlimited tastings and parking. There will also be music and a bunch of food trucks.

You can either get a ticket for noon-3pm or a ticket for 5pm-8p (Make sure to coordinate with friends so you don’t end up split up). There is also an after party at Wirsthaus. If you show your wristband, you get a free Bavarian pretzel.

Somebody Up There Likes Me

Cinefamily is hosting a one week run of “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” a comedy about a man, his best friend, and the woman they both adore watching their lives fly by.

But let’s get to the important part. Ron Swanson from “Parks and Recreation” is in this movie and going to be a the screenings for a Q&A! The evening is moderated by Chris Pratt on Friday, Jason Schwartzman on Saturday, and Zach Galifianakis on Sunday.

These people are awesome and you should probably go buy tickets here so you can check it out for yourself. It’s running until March 21st, but the Q&A sessions with Nick Offerman (aka Ron F*cking Swanson) is only happening March 15, 16, and 17th.

Bacon Social

Here are some of the amazing things offered at the Bacon Social: art on display, live music, booze, an arcade room and free bacon! I really don’t think I could come up with a list of things that would make me happier if I tried.

Bacon Social is happening this Saturday, March 16th in the warehouse district Downtown. Bacon, art, and local music are all hipster bait so be sure to wear your plaid and geeky glasses to blend in.

Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction

Everyone enjoys a comedy show, but I bet you probably haven’t seen a comedy show like this before. Ten comedians get together at The Nerdist Theater to bring you some high quality (and disturbing) fan fiction. Five of the comedians will have prepared works to read to the audience, the other five will be forced to write fanfiction on the topic of the audience’s choosing. Be sure to come prepared with some random television shows, movies, books, or just about any topic or historical figure you can think of. While you are listening to the pre-written stories ruin your childhood memories, the other comedians will be hurrying to finish their stories off stage.

This show is amazing! When I went to the show a few months ago I got to hear gems like a story based on John Cougar Mellencamp’s song “Jack and Diane,” a Jurassic Park dinosaur sex scene, and one titled “It’s the Great Orgy Charlie Brown”

LA Foodie's Drunken Dessert Cart

LA Foodie’s Drunken Dessert Cart combines desserts, coffee, and beer…which just so happen to be my three favorite things. For a $10 ticket you get artisan desserts and coffee from a bunch of local businesses including Ococoa Chocolates, Heart of Tartlets, Halo Top Creamery, Ivan’s Cooking, Creme Caramella, Toot Sweet Artisan Caramels, Karolynh’s, Secret Squirrel Cold Brew Coffee, LA Coffee Club, ButterSweet Minis, and Sweet Spils.

The whole thing takes place at Golden Road Brewery so they will also be pouring their own brews all night. However, it’s not just the regular bar at Golden Road you know and love. It’s at Chloe’s, Golden Road’s private club that’s for beer industry people only. This place looks amazing, but I never thought I’d be able to get in…until now

The ticket also includes a gift bag of freebies, access to a photobooth, and a $20 cab ride voucher with Uber Taxi (so you can fully enjoy those Golden Road beers)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Screening on 35mm print

Goddamn I love this movie! First of all, you get James Cameron at his best, (with no preachy environmental subtext). Secondly, it’s a sequel that’s better than the original. And last but not least, you get crazy Linda Hamilton being an overall badass.

Cinefamily is always hosting interesting events and screening awesome films and on Saturday March 23rd at 10pm they’ll be showing a rare 35mm print of Terminator 2.

There will be another screening on Sunday, March 24th with a special discussion beforehand with editor, Mark Goldblatt. Besides Terminator 2, he’s also worked on Rambo, True Lies, Showgirls and Armageddon. He’ll be talking about what it was like to work on all those films.

Bob Baker's Marionette Theater

Bob Baker’s Marionette Theater has been around since the 1960’s. After hearing it mentioned several times, it sounded weird enough to be on my to-do list. It’s in danger of closing so I wanted to check it out while I still had a chance.

I went in not knowing what to expect…what I got was a room full of small Asian children on a field trip and one of the most retro experiences of my life.

The current production is “Something to Crow About” and features songs about a day on the farm. Everything is straight out of a Loony Tunes cartoon. The music, the characters, even a weird non-consensual animal romance (ala Pepe Le Pew) The puppeteers come out into the audience and are in full view the whole time, which was a little jarring at first, but after a while you get into it.

These shows are definitely designed for children, so show up with some other people so you don’t look like a pedophile. But this place is a piece of Los Angeles history and definitely worth checking out. If you needed an additional perk, your ticket comes with free ice cream after the show.

Weekday shows are 10:30am and weekend shows are at 2:30pm. Tickets are $15. All the info you need is here

Dia de Los Muertos

If you’re looking to add a spooky twist to this fall season besides the usual Halloween Horror Nights and Haunted Hayrides, then check out Los Angeles Dia de Los Muertos. It’s a festival going on at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this Saturday, October 27th. Starting at noon and ending at midnight there will be a traditional Aztec procession, a costume contest for best Calaca (skeleton), food, music, dance, and hundreds of altars set up by people in honor of their deceased ancestors.

Stone Brewing Grand Opening

Although they’ve had a soft opening for a few weeks now, the official grand opening of Stone Brewing Company is happening tomorrow, October 18th. Their new location in Pasadena marks the brewery’s first presence in Los Angeles. It’s also only one of three stores outside of their main location in San Diego.

Their tasting room has 20 different beers on tap…that’s 20 different varieties of their OWN beer. They serve pours by 4, 8, and 16oz, or you can go and get yourself a growler. There’s an outdoor patio area that’s dog friendly, so bring your pup along. It’s also right near a metro stop so you don’t need to worry about driving.

The event is happening from 7pm-9pm tomorrow, but if you miss it they are open regularly Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Brewery Art Walk

The Brewery Art Walk happens twice a year and it’s coming up this weekend, October 20-21. The entire complex is made of hundreds of studio spaces where artists reside and work. The Brewery Art Walk lets you wander around and enter their spaces and see their art up close. It’s kind of surreal to see the run down exteriors compared to the ultra-creative interiors that the artists have created. The whole event including parking is free. Go visit the largest live-and-work artist colony in the world. It runs from 11am-6pm both days.
